Money Music Musing #5: Lyrical Lessons from “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy
The money-themed song Billionaire (contains strong language) by Travie McCoy and featuring Bruno Mars, was released in 2010 and worked its way up the Billboard charts to number 4. The lyrics convey the myth of being rich and hanging out with famous people but also recognize the basic needs of food, safety and security. I appreciate how they include helping people.
The backstory of the song is interesting. The idea came to Bruno when he was struggling early in his career. Travie then baked the impacts of the 2007-2008 recession into the lyrics. The challenge for most is having a plan for financial security and executing it. The first rule should be not to worry about what others have. It’s not a question of the haves versus the have nots. It’s not even a question of what you can do. Rather, it’s a question of what you’re willing to do. Needs and wants are not mutually inclusive.
Creating a stable financial foundation may be difficult but making better spending decisions early in life will pay off in the long run. Do I really need all those movie channels, to eat out frequently, buy designer clothes, a new car or high cost food products? No, I can identify many expenses where spending can be reduced.
The chances of me becoming a billionaire or having a hit song on Billboard is pretty much zilch but it doesn’t mean I can’t be a millionaire. I’d rather run out of wine while I wait for the next coupon worth 15% or 20% off than spend the extra money. Yes, I’ll continue to pick up pennies of the parking lot.
